Posted - July 8, 2019
The Exumas are an archipelago of 365 cays and islands, beginning just 35 miles southeast of Nassau. The islands are divided by three major areas – Great Exuma, Little Exuma, and the Exuma Cays – reachable in just an hour’s flight time from Florida. Upon arrival, one might simply pause for a few moments to take in the pristine beauty of the coastlines and surrounding sapphire-blue waters. Nature abounds on the islands. Moriah Harbour Cay National Park covers 13,440 acres and is home to a vital ecosystem with sand dunes, beaches, mangroves and nesting seabirds.Long stretches of white sand beaches exemplify the Exumas, providing picture-perfect opportunity for soaking up the sun. The islands are also a popular destination for golfers. Emerald Bay Bahamas provides a luxurious setting for playing a round of golf, as it sits right on the water’s edge, with views of the ocean and a marina filled with luxury yachts.
Another popular island to visit is Stainel Cay, which is in close proximity to many unique attractions. Pig Beach is especially an anomaly, famous for its swimming pigs, which paddle out to approaching boats in hopes of being fed. If you’re a James Bond fan, visit Thunderball Grottos, the site of memorable scenes of the 1965 Bond film “Thunderball.” Movie buffs might also want to visit Little Exuma where the beautiful beaches were used as sites for filming of two Pirates Of The Caribbean movies starring Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom.
Little Exuma and Great Exuma are picturesque islands connected by a single lane bridge. A drive across the bridge offers expansive views of pristine bays and beaches. Scenic Tropic of Cancer Beach, where the meridian line actually crosses, is particularly known for its long stretches of secluded beach and clear waters.
Visitors to Exuma will find a variety of luxury resort properties, so it is not surprising that the islands are a popular destination for weddings.
