Tokyo is an electrifying city, bustling with activity. One of the highlights of city sightseeing is the ascent to Tokyo Observatory where visitors are afforded breathtaking views of the surrounding city. When in Tokyo, one must also be sure to visit the local markets. One of the most famous is an outdoor fish market in Tsukiji where the city’s best chefs come to procure fresh seafood. Be sure to also explore Nakamise Arcade and Asakusa Kannon Temple, which is the oldest temple in the city, dating back to the 7th century.A visit to Japan would not, of course, be complete without seeing Mt. Fuji. Journey to piney Hakone National Park, which sits in the shadow of majestic Mt. Fuji and offers exceptional views of the mountain. Then take a cruise across picturesque Lake Ashi and ascent Mt. Komagatake by cable car for views of the forested mountains.
Kyoto, Japan’s former imperial capital, boasts 2,000 temples and shrines. Tour Kinkakuji Temple, the Golden Pavilion, and Sanjusangendo with its 1,001 statues of Kannon, Goddess of Mercy. Be sure also to stroll through the Gion district, where Kabuki traditions began long ago; you may even spot women in traditional dress scurrying along the narrow lanes of teahouses.
There is much to explore in the Takayama region as well. Step back in time in the rural Edo-period town of Takayama, nestled in the Japanese Alps, and visit one of Japan’s last family-owned sake breweries. The ancient cultures of Takayama come alive in the town’s historic district. Stroll along winding streets where the town’s tradition charms are preserved in its inns and homes. Feel the energy of bustling open-air markets that date back more than 600 years. Visit the Folk Craft Museum and the Festival Floats Exhibit Hall, where you can see parade floats dating back 400 years.
Japan offers travelers a wealth of opportunities to enjoy Asian cultural traditions. Learn about the Geisha, sample fine sake, indulge in the local cuisine, such as a Kaiseki-style meal. This will set the stage for a festive welcome and an eagerly anticipated stay with much to see and experience.
