Picture Yourself in Romantic St. Lucia

This teardrop-shaped island is an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea and Caribbean breezes. Rainforests sprinkle the land with wild orchids, and birds of paradise offer up splashes of brilliant color. Rich plantations produce bountiful quantities of bananas, coconuts, mangos, papayas and other fruits. But it’s the seemingly endless white sand beaches and translucent waters that will make St. Lucia feel like it was formed directly from your dreams.

Explore this lovely island by Jeep along its perimeter and take in magnificent ocean views all along the way. In Soufriere, founded by the French in 1746, you can get up close to the iconic Pitons, St. Lucia’s majestic twin peaks. Also of interest in this area is Sulphur Springs, the world’s only “drive-in” volcano, as well as botanical gardens, waterfalls and sprawling plantations.

In the region of Castries, the capital city, enjoy some of the island’s best beaches. Pigeon Island, an important historical site, is situated at the island’s northwestern tip. This 40-acre islet, connected by a causeway to St. Lucia’s west coast, is a beautiful nature park that reflects a thousand years of history. There are marked trails here with a number of historical sites, including the remains of an 18th-century British fort and Fort Rodney, where the admiral for whom it is named spied on French ships from this strategic viewpoint.

Visitors to St. Lucia enjoy a variety of available accommodations, including large and small resorts, quiet inns, and hilltop villas offering spectacular panoramic vistas of forested mountains and the sparkling sea below. There are also several European health spas to choose from, all of which feature tranquil surroundings and the latest techniques for pampering their guests.

Though diminutive in size – just 27 miles long and 14 miles at its widest – St. Lucia provides a wonderful get-away-from-it-all retreat for travelers seeking to unwind and relax in a tropical setting that just might make the heart skip a beat.
