Tracing History While Having Fun in Coastal Virginia

Posted - June 3, 2019
If you enjoy history, there is 400 years of it here! One of the region’s mottos is “First to the Land and First to the Stars!” This celebrates one of the first settlements in Jamestown, Virginia and the fact that many experts believe no place has played a larger role in the history of American flight technology than Langley Research Center. Children as well as adults will find Langley’s Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton fascinating. If your interest lies in all things nautical, check out the Mariners Museum in Newport News and the Navy Base Tour. There is also a WW2 era battleship, The Wisconsin, which is on display in Norfolk at a fabulous interactive museum, the Nauticus.

A short ferry ride away from Norfolk is the quaint area of Portsmouth, which has a Children’s Museum to keep little ones learning and enjoying themselves with displays and cute photo opportunities.

If wildlife is your thing, you will enjoy the Virginia Zoological Park in Norfolk. To further scratch your itch for wildlife, visit the Virginia Living Museum, which has examples of many fish and animals native to Virginia. Animals are featured indoors and on an outdoor walk.

An article on the Coastal Virginia region would not be complete, of course, without a few words on Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. Purchasing a ticket is the only way to truly get the most out of Colonial Williamsburg and fully participate in all of the interactive events. The docents and guides there truly love what they do and are incredibly knowledgeable and fun.

Busch Gardens is only minutes away from Colonial Williamsburg and will satisfy any thrill-seekers in your group with roller coasters, as well as European-themed lands. During the holidays Busch Gardens is decorated in twinkling lights and has many high-quality holiday themed shows.
